Some parties, like the greens, favoured following the earlier decision of the German parliament, the Bundestag, which last month backed an unconditional start to talks with North Macedonia and a conditional start for Albania. However, Blok said that if all other EU member states supported a start date for Albanian talks at the European Council, The Netherlands would not stand in their way.
The conclusions of the debate in the Dutch parliament will now have to be sublimated in a common stance of all the parliamentary parties. While the outcome of debate in The Netherlands will cheer the government in Skopje, it will come as a blow to Tirana. Both countries hope to get a firm date to start membership talks before the end of the year. The strong reservations expressed by the French government about EU enlargement in general still remain an important obstacle, however.
Of the seven states that have emerged from the former Yugoslavia, only two, Slovenia and Croatia, have joined the EU. Two others, Serbia and Montenegro, have opened accession talks. North Macedonia is the next in line.
