Larger size prints cost more and, as others in the edition are sold, the price of those remaining rises. Not all prints will have been made at the same time - and this affects their commercial punch. Years can elapse between the first and final prints being made.
This makes the earlier prints rarer and therefore more sought after. The artist might die before the entire edition has been printed - or their estate may create new editions. Obviously, these posthumous or estate prints are unsigned. You should be wary of viewing them as an investment, says Barnett. The bewildering number of different paper types and processes used historically, and an inconsistency in terms to describe them, can be overwhelming.

That said, you should always buy museum standard archival prints where possible because they last longer - up to years if properly cared for. Prints should come signed and numbered, or accompanied by a certificate with this information.
If in doubt, ask.
